Interesting Notes From the Weekend
There are a couple of things of interest I took away from the weekend on both the LPGA & Canadian Golf Tours from a business perspective. Both pertained to the use of Twitter for golf! The first was how the LPGA Tour is using Twitter to promote its players and reach out to a different demographic. The second was how the Canadian Tour used Twitter for live photos and scoring to keep fans updated on the action.
The LPGA Tour
This one I love! This weekend at the Wegmans LPGA Championship player caddy bibs included the Twitter handle of the player in addition to their name. There are 119 current LPGA Tour players who have active Twitter accounts. What a great way to increase fan engagement and interaction. My question is when will the PGA Tour and other developmental tours follow suit?
The Canadian Tour
The PGA Tour did admittedly take the lead here a year ago or so and other top tier professional sports (NHL, NFL etc) do it well, but I was impressed at the job of the Canadian Tour this weekend at the Times Colonist Island Savings Open with regards to Twitter. From the Tour’s Twitter account (@CanTour) they updated stories, posting pictures and did live scoring down the stretch! Great job! The only thing that I found odd was that a number of players and fans were Tweeting to the @VictoriaOpen account on Twitter that had not sent a Tweet since May 17, 2011. Not sure where they got the account name…If you are not using it, close the account!
Kudos to the LPGA Tour and Canadian Tour for a great Twitter week in golf!!
