Sani Marc Canada Cup – PGA of Quebec

Victoriaville to host the top pros in the country for the next three years

Victoriaville, Quebec – Following the Vallée du Richelieu and Le Blainvillier clubs, the Victoriaville Golf Club will play host to the prestigious Canada Cup tournament.

The Quebec PGA, which engineered the Canada Cup’s renaissance in 2010 after a 44-year absence from the golf scene, confirmed at a news conference today that a three-year agreement has been signed with the Victoriaville Golf Club, a gem of a course in the Bois-Francs tourist region.

The 2013 Sani Marc Canada Cup, presented by the City of Victoriaville, will take place from July 29 to August 4, with 141 of the top professional golfers in Canada competing, along with 15 amateurs selected as wild-card entries.

The pros will be chasing a top prize of $30,000, and the overall purse is a record $175,000. The Canada Cup prize money has been steadily increasing: previous purses were $100,000 in 2010 and $150,000 in 2011 and 2012.

In announcing the big news, Quebec PGA CEO Jean Trudeau explained that the SaniMarc Canada Cup’s move to Victoriaville owes much to the vision of Mayor Alain Rayes, the directors of the Victoriaville Golf Club, and financial partners from the Bois-Francs region including Desjardins Caisse des Bois-Francs, Gaudreau Environnement, Groupe Plombaction and Destination Victoriaville.

“Right from our first meeting with the mayor and golf club officials last July 3, I could see what a dynamic team they had, and that they were keenly interested in bringing a major event like this to Victoriaville,” Mr. Trudeau said.

“The success of this event in the Bois-Francs region is assured. The local public has shown its enthusiasm and its huge interest in professional golf in the past,” he added.

The Victoriaville club has a proven track record when it comes to large-scale events, having hosted 11 Quebec Opens between 1978 and 1991.

The three previous editions of the Canada Cup have produced just two champions, but both are well- known names. In 2010, Dave Lévesque, then established in Ontario, won at La Vallée du Richelieu, finishing 11 under par. The following year, on the same course, Bryn Parry of the PGA of British Columbia also turned in a scorecard of 11-under par to take top honours. Parry then successfully defended his title in 2012 at Le Blainvillier, besting Ontario’s Bill Walsh on the first play-off hole.

Lévesque and Parry finished out the 2012 season tied for fourth place in the PGA of Canada Player Rankings.

With its overall purse of $175,000, the Sani Marc Canada Cup becomes the most lucrative tournament in the HGrégoire Prestige Series and, indeed, Canada’s richest golf event, topping the purses of the tournaments on the new PGA Tour Canada international circuit by $25,000.

While B.C.’s Parry has ruled the two most recent Canada Cups, they have also been notable for excellent showings by top Quebec pros.

In 2010, Yvan Beauchemin was the runner-up, Kevin Senécal finished fourth, while Jason Morin and Éric Landreville locked up sixth place on the leaderboard.

Sénécal roared back in 2011, completing the tournament just one stroke behind Parry. Louis-Pierre Godin and Lindsay Wilson also did well, coming in sixth and seventh respectively.

Last year saw Wilson and Beauchemin finish in a tie for third, with Lévesque and Landreville sharing sixth-place honours.

Plenty of the leading lights on the Quebec pro scene will, of course, be competing in Victoriaville, as the field of 141 pros will include 55 representing the Quebec PGA.

Some 40 competitors are expected from the Ontario PGA, and the next best represented among the Canadian PGA provincial zones will be the B.C. and Alberta associations, with 18 and 12 entries respectively.

New and noteworthy at the 2013 Canada Cup will be the inclusion of 15 amateur golfers, 12 of whom will earn their trip to the tournament based on their cumulative rankings in the 2013 Golf Quebec Triple Crown events.

Also invited as wild-card entries will be the Victoriaville Golf Club’s 2012 amateur champion, the winner of a July qualifying event reserved for amateurs, plus the top-ranked Victoriaville Golf Club–affiliated golfer in that event.

The highlights of the Canada Cup will be broadcast on specialty channel TVA Sports.

The Sani Marc Canada Cup, presented by the City of Victoriaville: a can’t-miss event on the 2013, 2014 and 2015 calendars, coming to the magnificent fairways of the Victoriaville Golf Club!
