Hashtags for Beginners & Business
I was doing a webinar last week for some Real Estate agents and in one section I briefly covered hashtags and how businesses can use them. The feedback from the participants was positive, but the thing that surprised me the most were comments along the lines of “thank you for explaining hashtags, I had no idea what they were or were used for”.
What is a Hashtag?
A hashtag is a word or series of words that begin with the symbol #. Hashtags became quite popular when Twitter was launched. In particular Hashtags were used by groups of people who wanted to follow conversations while at an event or to follow conversation if they couldn’t attend an event. Hashtags are like a hyperlink website URL, click the link on the platform(s) you are using and follow the conversation for that has tag. Remember if there are any spaces in your hashtags the link will be broken.
How Business Can Use Hashtags
If you use your Twitter, Instagram, Google+, Pinterest or any of the other social networking sites we want you to #stopusinghashtagsthataremeaningless (like that last one). If you are using meaningless hashtags and wondering why a social campaign is not converting, that is likely one reason.
Finding Business With Hashtags
Hashtags are great for finding business, increasing engagement and being relevant in the space. A common way we see hashtags used is for location such as #YVR (for Vancouver), #Kelowna, #Abbotsford etc. You can search these hashtags to find people using the platform who are in your local area. If your area has a popular location hashtag remember to use it in relevant tweets so that others in the area may find you even if your businesses is not what they were looking for. You can also search hashtags related to your business (in our case we both search and use #golfmanagement) to keep up with what is happening in the business of golf. You can search for relevant topics or current news.
Begin by treating hashtags as an opportunity for your business and spend some time each day reviewing the conversations. The results will surprise you. And you may find some relevant hashtags that you can use that you might not of thought of before. It can’t be long before Facebook jumps on the hashtag band wagon as well!
