Olympic Anniversary vs. Hockey Day in Canada

Weekend Dilemma
This Saturday poses a dilemma in our house. It is both a day of celebration for the one year anniversary of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games and it is Hockey Day in Canada.  Now who would schedule such a thing?  For us the Olympics was a great two week stretch and we took in as much of the street activity as we could along with most of the medal ceremonies and three hockey games. But Hockey Day in Canada has become somewhat of a tradition of sitting in front of the TV, eating popcorn and watching for the day.

Olympic Anniversary Events
Saturday events in downtown Vancouver kick off with a breakfast with John Furlong at the Vancouver Convention Center starting at 9:30. He will launch his book about an insider’s look at the Games.  Tickets are still available for $55 (book included) or $35 (no book). Skating at Robson Square starts at 9am. Skating is free and will include visits by Olympic Athletes, performances and the rink will be open until 11pm. At 10am the Vancouver Art Gallery will open with free admission until 5pm. A Legacy Event will take place at the Creekside Community Center from 11am to 3pm to celebrate the legacy of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games with Olympic-themed activities such as a hockey sledge race, pin trading, memorabilia on display and highlights of the Games in the former Athletes Village. On Robson and Granville Streets the ReLiveIt program will be taking place from noon to 9pm with street hockey, live music, TV screens and signings (details here). The Olympic Cauldron will be lit at 4pm. In the evening Yaletown’s historic streetscape will be lighted during Illuminate Yaletown which features contemporary light art installations in 20 locations on both Friday and Saturday nights. For more information http://insidevancouver.ca has a list of the events and links to their websites.

Hockey Day in Canada
Hockey Day in Canada is an annual special broadcast to celebrate the game in Canada that includes special features leading up to a tripleheader of NHL action featuring the six Canadian teams. This year Ron McLean and Don Cherry will host from Whitehorse Yukon. The broadcast starts at 9am Pacific time with segments from Whitehorse, Oakville, Victoria, Regina, Quebec City and Cole Harbour before the first game at 11am. This year’s theme will be “Trailblazers” showcasing how hockey fosters leadership, exploration and innovation. The Edmonton Oilers will host the Ottawa Senators (11am PST) followed by more live segments. Then the Toronto Maple Leafs will visit the Montreal Canadiens (4pm PST) and the Vancouver Canucks (currently the #1 Team in the NHL) will welcome the Calgary Flames (7pm PST). I enjoy the live segments the most while Jeff of course prefers the games.

And at the same time as all of this the Vancouver International Boat Show will have yachts on display at the False Creek Yacht Club as well as at the show venue at the Convention Center.

What to do?
Our plan for now is to watch the live Hockey Day in Canada segments until 11am. Then to head out for some breakfast, likely walking down Granville to check out the street action before heading to the seawall and False Creek to check out the boats. We may visit the community center if the weather is good for a long walk or a bike. If not it will be the end of game one and the live segments at home before heading to watch the cauldron get lit and off to Yaletown for some ‘Illumination” and hockey watching in one or more restaurants or pubs along the way. (If it is pouring rain we will likely head straight home after the lighting picking up some Urban Fare for dinner on the way). Either way it sounds like a pretty good Vancouver Saturday. Watch for our Tweets along the way.
