Wine Tasting at Home – Mike Weir Chardonnay
As most of you know Tara and I are big fans and supporters of home grown B.C. wines. On a recent trip to Ontario we received a bottle from our good friend and fellow enjoyer of wine, Vince Kishimoto. We toured a few wineries with Vince and others this summer (see blog here) when he visited B.C. and he wanted us to try a wine from his region which is how we ended up with this bottle. Thanks Vince!
Mike Weir was born and raised in Ontario and has roots in the Niagara region. The grapes that the winery uses are from the vineyards of Château des Charmes in Niagara-on-the-Lake. All Mike Weir wines meet the strict guidelines of VQA Ontario. VQA Ontario is a provincial regulatory authority that administers Ontario’s wine appellation system. Very similar to in BC it’s primary functions are wine testing, audits, inspections and compliance.
Mike Weir Chardonnay
We managed to get the bottle back to Vancouver without opening it and got to enjoy our own wine tasting at home with this 2009 Chardonnay. About half the grapes were fermented in stainless steel and the other half in new and aged French oak barrels. Rich fruit flavours are present, like melon. For a Chardonnay, which we haven’t been huge fans of in the past, this was a good value wine that didn’t have the usual sharpness or dryness in the finish of some Chardonnay’s we’ve had in the past. At $14.95 this is a value wine and at the price we would definitely have it again.
When Mike Weir hosted the Champions dinner at Augusta National Golf Club in 2004 following his Masters win he insisted that all of the wine be VQA wines from Niagara.
