Wine Tasting at Home – Santa Julia Malbec
The Santa Julia Reserva Malbec is another one of our wines from a recent shopping trip to the Marquis Wine store on Davie St. It was from a case of mix and match wines we selected, all of which were under $20. We were looking to try some different wines and get out of our usual routine of tasting B.C. and Austraila wine. Santa Julia from Argentina fit the criteria.
Santa Julia was founded in 1963 on Mendocinian soils in Mendoza, Argentina. They have a range of grape varieties including classics like Malbec, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. They also grow unconventional varieties in Argentina such as Viognier, Pinot Grigio and Tempranillo. They are big on sustainability and helping the community. You can read about their programs here.
Santa Julia Reserva Malbec
We had the 2009 Malbec with pasta for dinner. It was big and bold tasting, rich in flavour of plum with a bit of spicy, and a smoky finish. Although it is aged in French oak for 10 months, we didn’t really get much of oak in either the smell or taste. Overall we liked it and would recommend the Santa Julia Malbec. If you enjoy a really classic Malbec wine this is it at a great price point too!
