YVR Twestival 2011

Twestival 2011
Now in its third year, Twestival® (or Twitter Festival) uses social media for social good by connecting offline communities in person on a single day to highlight a great cause and have a fun event. Twestival is the largest global grassroots social media fundraising initiative to date. Since 2009, volunteers have raised close to $1.2 million for 137 nonprofits. All local events are organized 100% by volunteers and 100% of all ticket sales and donations go direct to projects. Last night’s Vancouver edition of Twestival was a huge success raising $8,012 for Beauty Night Society.

Vancouver Lookout
We had not been to the Vancouver Lookout atop Harbour Center before and it was a fabulous venue to host the event. The ride to the top was included in the price of the Twestival ticket but for $15 it would be a great place to bring visitors from out of town to show them Vancouver from a different perspective. Some of the buildings that are so familiar to us from ground level look completely different from above. Enjoying the amazing views while sipping wine was a great way to spend the evening. Speaking of wine we thought we would give you our opinion about a few of the wines that were available for tasting.

Wine Tasting
The wineries represented included Hester Creek, Summerhill, Nichol and Tinhorn Creek. From the Hester Creek Winery in Oliver, BC we tried the brand new 2009 Character Red which is now available in select private wine stores including Sheraton Wall Center’s Fine Spirits store. It is worth picking up a few bottles now to keep for a year or two. From the Summerhill Pyramid Winery in Kelowna we tasted the 2008 Organic Gewurtztraminer. It has been awarded 91 points from the Beverage Tasting Institute. We learned that Summerhill has been using 80% certified organic grapes for years and is in the process of applying for Biodynamic Certification. They are committed to reaching 100% organic production. From Tinhorn Creek we tasted the 2008 Cabernet Franc. This was out favorite of the night and a few bottles will soon be in our wine rack. We also learned that Tinhorn Creek will have its own restaurant “Miradoro” opening this spring. The food will be “modern wine country cuisine” and is a joint venture between the winery and Manuel Ferriera owner of Gavroche in Vancouver. Tickets for there 2011 Canadian Concert series are also now on sale.

Twestival in Vancouver was a great success. We chatted with friends new and old and enjoyed some great wines. We look forward to 2012.
