Dining in Vancouver – Incendio
Easy to Miss
We happened upon Incendio (located on the corner of Alexander and Columbia streets in Gastown) by accident. We were coming home from a meeting and know that there is usually parking available on Alexander street if we want to stop in Gastown for lunch on the way home. This day we parked at the end of Alexander near Main and were walking towards the Powell/Alexander/Carrell corner when we saw an empty table on the Incendio outdoor patio. We wanted to sit outside because it was sunny but in the end actually moved inside for lunch as the sun moved behind the building.
We were quite impressed with the décor and the layout of the restaurant. Most of the walls are the original exposed brick as are the half-moon windows at the top of the building. The kitchen is open style making the space feel larger than it actually is. There are about 50 – 60 inside table seats plus another 15 along two counter top bars (that look like a fun place to eat), one that runs along the kitchen and the other that runs along the bar. The tables and chairs are wood finish which works well with the brick.
The menu focuses on pizza, calzones and pasta but also has a large selection of appetizers and some other entrees and salads, all of which sounded really appetizing. With too many good choices we decided to share a pizza (mainly because we saw one on a table on our way in and it looked delicious). And it was. We shared a large which we were able to split half and half (not available with the small) and it was enough for 4 or for leftovers for us. Jeff chose the Carnivore – Pepperoni, Ham, Chorizo and Prosciutto and Tara the Gastown – Spinach, Roasted Chicken, Sundried Tomatoes, Pine Nuts and Gorgonzola. The large wood fire oven that dominates the kitchen was one sign that the pizza would be good but the ingredients were also very fresh and the combos just right.
The pizza was great and the service good. We will definitely visit again and look forward to trying some of the great sounding appetizers and interesting pasta sauces.
