Summer Activity Planning

Summer in the City – 2010
Last summer we spent all of our free time doing activities in and around the Vancouver area. We took a few small trips to Whistler and Bowen Island but primarily tried to see and do as many new things in Vancouver as possible. This summer our plans are much the same but include planning for a few more ‘local’ excursions. There is so much to see and do right here in Vancouver and the surrounding area that our list keeps growing…

Baseball – Vancouver or Seattle?
It has now become a tradition (2 years running) to take in a ‘Nooner at the Nat’ with Tara’s Aunt and Uncle from New West.  The Vancouver Canadians are scheduled to play their first game at home on June 21st but the full schedule is not yet available to start planning.  Another baseball option for us is to head south to a Seattle Mariners game. The home opener is April 12th but the season is long and runs into early October. With the addition of a second daily Amtrak to Seattle and the station being located right at the ball park, a day trip for an afternoon game would also be a great thing to do.

Arts and Culture
We can’t forget how cultural Vancouver is.  Last year we saw Alter Boyz and Les Miserables, this year we already have tickets to The Lion King at the newly renovated Queen Elizabeth Theatre and also plan to take in parts of the International Jazz Festival June 25th to July 4th and MusicFest Vancouver (formerly Festival Vancouver) August 6th to 15th.  The Vancouver Art Gallery will also be presenting a collection from the Musee d’Orsay Paris.

Beyond Vancouver
Last year we took trips to Whistler for biking and to Bowen Island basically just to see it since we had never been before. This year we already have another trip to Whistler planned at the end of June for biking and dining. We will spend three nights at Club Intrawest in the upper village and were given a great anniversary gift of a gift certificate to Araxi (thanks mom). We also plan to check out the Scandinave Spa and of course our favorite restaurant La Rua.  After Whistler we are planning to spend a few nights ‘off the mainland’ to learn to kayak and to explore some new places. We picked up a bunch of info at the Outdoor Adventure Show and have narrowed it down to either the Sunshine Coast or Galiano Island. Feel free to provide suggestions…

Back at Home
Other plans in Vancouver include a China Town Tour and a visit to the Yat-Sen Garden (still haven’t been there), a performance at the Haywood Band Stand, a visit to Capilano River Park, and of course a long list of restaurants we still have not tried – Metro, L’Autra Buca, Twisted Fork, Nook, Deacon’s Corner etc. etc. etc. One summer will not be enough. Good thing we plan to be here for a while.  If you are in Stanley Park don’t forget to look for us on our bikes we plan to be there daily for a ride!
